I didn't track anything, but did make smart choices where possible. Fortunately, lots of food in Vietnam is steamed and there were lots of fruit and vegies so I thought I was doing ok. I indulged in a few cocktails and tried tiny bites of some of the foods that my daughters or husband were trying, but felt like I was on track to not gain weight. We did some walking, but the incredibly high temperatures prevented us from walking too far. So, with some trepidation I got on the scales this morning. As I stepped on my husband said loudly, "Oh oh!!" but I have in fact lost about 600g. I'll do my official weigh in tomorrow, but I am just delighted that I haven't gained anything at all.
Behaviorally, here's what I noticed:
- I was keener to be on the beach or in the pool than in other years. Still wanted to cover up as much as possible, but I did swim in public every day
- When we were at the Ho Chi Minh war tunnels, we were invited to go down into one of them. I entered one, saw the tiny width, and assumed I would get stuck, so I backed out, claiming to be claustrophobic. I am used to not doing the adventurous things, and it has become a habit. I also waited for the tour guide to say something like, "You shouldn't go in there - you're too big" but he didn't! (He did say it to another woman though.)
- I didn't feel like I was 'missing out' when making food choices. I really enjoyed the sensible choices. I've made the way of eating a natural part of my life
- I used the gym at the hotel, and there were other people in there. I never have to share the gym at home so this was a first. I enjoyed feeling confident enough to get on the crosstrainer and go for it.
- I had some sleeveless shirts made! I never ever go sleeveless, but I want these for around home because it's so much cooler to wear no sleeves. My family tells me that I can wear these shirts to work too, but I'm not convinced. The town of Hoi An had literally hundreds of tailors so we all had things made. When I tried on the first shirt the tailor had a look at it, then she suddenly whipped it off me while I was standing in the middle of the shop. My daughters and I were speechless and started laughing. One of them said, "Oh well Mum, I guess that means your fitting is over?" Later they told me that 24kg ago, I would have been mortified and angry, but today I just shrugged my shoulders and laughed about it. They're right.
We saw lots of funny spellings of English words, but this one made us get the cameras out!
