My day started at 4am with a text message from my daughter saying that there had been a 7.1 earthquake in the city where my in-laws live. She had called her Nana to check on her, but felt that we needed to call her too. Poor old dear was terrified. She's 90 and lives in a nursing home. No damage in her room, but they had no water or electricity for hours. She really wanted a cup of tea and to be able to flush the toilet! While we talked to her on the phone, another tremor happened and it was awful listening to her saying, "Stop it! Stop it! Oh I'm so scared..." Thankfully, my BIL and SIL were able to boil water on their BBQ and take a thermos to her. There is widespread damage to buildings but no deaths, due mainly to it happening at 4:30am. A teenage boy had a lucky escape when the wall of his upstairs bedroom blew out, and he fell outside on the ground, then bricks fell on him.
