Today a colleague from work came home with me to help me set up a circuit in the small gym at our apartment. I haven't had a lot to do with this guy, but I know he's a gentle, lovely man. He is a PE teacher and was happy to help me out, but I was so nervous! It's not easy to put on the gym clothes and show just how unfit you really are.
He gave great tips for using the treadmill, bike and crosstrainer. Then he gave me a circuit of 8 exercises, mostly using the huge and complex weight machine. I'll be doing 20 repetitions of the 8 exercises, rest for 3 mins, then do the circuit two more times. He also wrote a plan for increasing what I'm doing over the next month. I did ok with everything except the sit-ups. I could NOT do 20 of them. I did 12 the first time, but only managed 10 on the 2nd circuit. I'm really planning to improve and increase that. I think I may have weird wobbly legs in the morning!
I wonder if he has any idea of how vulnerable I was feeling. I refused to think about it all day, because I would have probably looked for an excuse to cancel on him. However, he was very positive, and left me feeling good about what I'm trying to do.

And by not cancelling and by facing it all and by doing it all you are so so so in control. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome!! I'm proud of you for not cancelling.
ReplyDeleteHow proud you must feel now that you've got the gym sorted out!
ReplyDeleteYour daughters won't recognise you when they see you next - you'll be so buffed!
Your experience has reminded me that I was going to start at a gym once I reach half-way in my journey so now, I'll have to do it!
Best wishes - Gae oxoxo
Well done on the circuit! Just wait after a few weeks of doing it, 20 sit ups will be easy! Do you have a fitball? Sometimes they help with sit ups as they support your back more. They do make it easier, but they isolate the workout to the muscles they are supposed to be targeting.
ReplyDeleteYou have a very supportive PE teacher there!
Congrats! That is awesome and you did it despite feeling vulnerable! If you ask me that is the very definition of courageous!!! Keep it up......I cant wait to get back to the gym, only 4 days till the all clear from the surgeon and its on like donkey kong for me!!!
ReplyDeleteWell done!!!!! How nice that you have supportive people around you!
Hey Deb, good on you for going through with it! I can imagine how vulnerable it would have made you feel - my boyfriend's cousin is a personal trainer, he's a really lovely, gentle guy but I just can't quite bring myself around to asking for his help just yet - hopefully I can take some inspiration from you and bite the bullet soon!
ReplyDeleteAll the very best with the new gym circuit - will look forward to hearing how it all goes!
